Avatar didn't win because it just wasn't that good a STORY. I mean, it won all the FX stuff, right?
Here's a rather annoying article from Time on why Avatar lost:
http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1970502-1,00.html
It gives a smug little list on why Avatar didn't beat The Hurt Locker without addressing the rather obvious fact that The Hurt Locker is a far superior film.
It feels like they're making a bunch of lame excuses for Cameron. Blecht.
yeah, Sandra Bullock winning is just a lame joke. I mean, can we just get rid of these awards??/ They close down fucking entire streets here for the entire week before setting up the 'carpet'. Traffic gets worse, they spend millions of dollars so these rich actors can come in and look pretty for one night.
Bite me, Academy.
I've got no problem with excellence being rewarded, but The Oscars just get it wrong almost every time, opting for safe middle-of-the-road or right-leaning borefests like Out of Africa, The English Patient or that shit that Sandra Bullock won an oscar for this year. Then they throw in a left-field choice like Juno (which was also shit) to try and make themselves look hip. And they only recognise true genius when they've overlooked them countless times already (see Scorsese, The Rings Trilogy etc).
Hurt Locker's great if you overlook the fact that the premise that the entire story is built upon - 3 guys driving round Baghdad in a landrover defusing bombs - DOESN'T HAPPEN.
Apart from that, it's all great. What were the dresses like? Did Jack Nicholson grin at the camera?
